Recently a historic and mind-blowing astronomical image swept across the planet. A ring of orange blazed against the darkness, and humanity saw an actual black hole for the first time. It's hard to overstate what a monumental achievement this was. Using a network of telescopes to create an aperture the size of Earth, the Event Horizon Telescope was able to image the supermassive black hole M87*, located 53 million light years away.
We are living in a world where the boundaries of human knowledge are expanding in ways that would have been hard to imagine even just fifty years ago, and women are playing an integral part of the process. The delighted face of Katie Bouman (the computer scientist who led the team developing the algorithm for processing the black hole data) as she watched their program create the first black hole image will be inspiration for the next generation of aspiring young astronomers.
