Discovery Science Show, Solar Eclipses, and More...

Hello, everyone! We are in the middle of the holiday rush, but I thought I'd give an update on the latest news here at Boutique Academia.

  • We've had our jewelry appear on TV before (our Avogadro's Tie Bar was in The Big Bang Theory) but this time several of our necklaces will be worn by Emmy award winning Tamara Krinsky as she stars in the upcoming Discovery Science show "Tomorrow's World Today". It will air in the spring of 2018, so watch for it!

  • Solar Eclipse NecklaceOur Solar Eclipse Necklace was a huge success... so much so that we sold out within a few days! The local Eugene, Oregon newspaper ran an article about it on the business section front page. There was also a lot of online interest generated by a Buzzfeed article featuring eclipse related accessories.

  • We had a great time in Seattle at GeekGirlCon 2017. If you are in the Pacific Northwest and can go to only one convention, I highly recommend this one. I've tabled a few conventions over the years, and I've never seen such a happy, friendly, supportive crowd as at GeekGirlCon. I always leave feeling energized by the enthusiasm of the customers. My favorite thing is to see women attending the convention wearing jewelry they purchased from us one or two years previously. Those women always come tell us how much they have enjoyed their STEM jewelry, and how important the pieces have become to them. Comments like those are what make this work meaningful to me, and I cherish them every time.
  • Our old workspace was getting too cramped, so we've been working on remodeling a new office. I made sure to include a shelf to display my new LEGO Women of NASA set (and, let's be honest, my LEGO Doctor Who set and Ghostbusters reboot set... you don't choose the fandom life, the fandom life chooses you).

  • We have a few new designs besides the Solar Eclipse Necklace. I am particularly pleased with two of them. First, we have a new neurotransmitter necklace that displays dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine. I spent weeks and weeks trying to find the exact combination of materials that would make an attractive bib-style necklace that could neurochemically represent love, joy, and learning. Here it is:

  • Our new Orion Constellation Necklace is also one of my new favorites. Some years ago I used star charts to design a line of constellation pendants with the stars engraved in black onyx. I like them, but I've been wanting for a while to make a new constellation piece that has that bit of...extra. I worked with an excellent pewter artist to design a constellation pendant that has the stars cut through and also the right ascension and declination on the back, reversed to match the stars. I don't think the photos do it justice... and I need to add some pictures of it being worn. The antiqued look really appeals to me, and I find it highly satisfying to wear and touch. We are planning to add more constellations after the holidays.
